Link exchange

Just got an email from someone proposing to do a link exchange, where they link my site on theirs and vice versa. Our sites have nothing in common, not even remotely close. This sounds like a waste of time or even a scam to me, but I don’t know much about SEO, so I’m not 100 percent sure. Am I right? Or is link exchanges legit?

I recently had a university contact me about linking to their site. They just wrote something about my industry but obviously we have very different sites. Would a link exchange be bad there? If we both wrote blogs about the other?

You have received "SEO spam," just delete it. Link exchanges are misunderstood and are fine, but the sites should be related. The type of link exchange that doesn't really work is the oldschool type where people have a page called links.html and they have 100+ link trades linked from that page. Honestly that still does work but the effect of those links is extremely minimal due to the way the algorithm works and you might get an unnatural outbound link penalty. But if somebody who has a related site wants to set up a deal like: "I will link my page A to your page B, if you link your page C to my page D" that's fine as long as it makes sense to do so. If you both have sites about cats and the new links seem logical and useful to the readers, then there's nothing wrong with that. The authority level of page B and D will both increase, the trade off is that some other pages on each site will have slightly less. Also, the sites should both be quality sites with real backlink profiles and not PBNs or spam. Since the links are editorial in nature, this should also be compliant with the webmaster guidelines but I'm sure somebody out there will tell you that it's not and that's their opinion. Certainly if you got abusive with that technique, it might be non compliant. Edit: Oh and, if you have absolutely no idea what's going on, don't trade links. It would be very easy for somebody to manipulate you and setup a deal where they link to your content from a PA 7 page if you link them from a PA 27 page and that's not a square deal there... They might suggest it's fair because "you both have DA 40 sites" and that's not how anything works...

Link exchanges are no longer useful at all, especially if the sites are unrelated. You can even face a penalty from google if you do that too often, so its better to stay away from such tactics.
